Artist's Art Advocacy

HUMAN RIGHTS IS WOMAN´S RIGHTS

My advocacy for Women’s Rights spurred me to pursue my art. I want to present, through irony, the essence and power of women. I believe women deserve their place in society along with men, thus my desire to pursue women’s issues, in particular, women’s rights violations.

It has been a subject of contention and debate since ancient civilization: Women do not possess rights enjoyed by their male counterparts, notwithstanding the fact that every human being is entitled to exercise his/her rights.

Inherent historical and traditional biases and the apparently fragile feminine physique conspired to deprive women of the rights, rights which certain sectors deliberately ignored in order to satisfy human interest, or fulfill a custom. Women have become victims of their own civilization.

These rights have not been institutionalized by law nor ignored by customs, traditions or ethnic groups. Just like tribes that practice the custom of Female Genital Mutilation, certain cultures dictate that women have limited integrity and autonomy. In some countries women are deprived of their right to suffrage and their right to enter a legal contract. They are also often constrained by marital, parental and religious rights and have less freedom of speech. Women’s rights to equal wages at work and their rights to be educated and to own a property are likewise often curtailed.

These blatant violations of women’s rights often lead to physical and sexual abuse and, by extension, transmit diseases, quicken women’s mortality, and position her as a minority in a society. And this discriminating and unfair treatment of women effectively stole her liberty to live a life of freedom and to exercise her rights and having her own bureaucracy.

As a witness to these unjust experiences of women, through my art, I want to place women in their right place in society, emphasize their power, beauty and essence that were intentionally ignored due to an inherently sexist tradition and history.

I intend my art to serve women.

To help practice their rights to be educated.

To liberate them from the shackles of a sexism and make them free to exercise their rights.

To be aware of their worth and to stand for their independence against the corruption of their rights and brace life with their beauty and madness.

Women, Know Your Rights.
